Nigel Farage urged to clarify whether he saved tax on Essex constituency home

Labour and the Liberal Democrats have called on Nigel Farage to provide a clear explanation over the purchase of a house in his Clacton constituency. The property, worth £885,000, was bought last year in the name of his partner, Laure Ferrari. Questions have been raised about whether this arrangement allowed the Reform UK leader to avoid paying around £44,000 in higher-rate stamp duty.

At first, Farage suggested he had personally bought the home but later said it was purchased solely by Ferrari. He explained the decision was made for “security reasons” and stressed that his partner comes from a successful French family, capable of funding the purchase herself. He has repeatedly denied giving or lending her money, saying he has no financial interest in the property

However, a BBC investigation has looked into Ferrari’s family background and found limited evidence of significant wealth. Records suggest her father’s haulage business was liquidated in 2020 and that the family’s assets are modest compared with the value of the Frinton-on-Sea property. Ferrari, now 45, has previously run a clothes shop that closed and is currently listed as a director of Baxter Laois Limited, a company linked to Farage’s gin brand, which shows only small assets in its most recent filings.

Farage has since confirmed that specialist legal advice was sought from a tax King’s Counsel, who concluded that the correct amount of stamp duty was paid and that there was no wrongdoing. Still, critics argue that unanswered questions remain, particularly given Farage’s recent criticism of Labour’s Angela Rayner over her own stamp duty issue.

Labour Party chair Anna Turley said Farage must be open about whether he contributed to the house purchase, while Liberal Democrat spokesperson Sarah Olney also pressed for clarity. Both argue that transparency is necessary, especially as Farage continues to attack others on financial integrity.

For now, Farage insists the property is wholly owned by Ferrari and that all taxes have been properly paid. But with the matter still under scrutiny, the debate over his financial interests and personal credibility remains active in the latest Nigel Farage news.
